Feds arrest Charlotte mayor on corruption charges


Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon was arrested on federal corruption charges today and faces up to 50 years in prison if convicted, the News & Observer reports, but he will remain in office until he is convicted or resigns.

According to the article, the FBI alleges Cannon solicited $1 million and took bribes including $20,000 cash last month. Cannon, a Democrat, has only been in the mayor’s office for five months, but the investigation started years ago when he was mayor pro tem.
