Greensboro City Attorney Mujeeb Shah-Khan has resigned following a closed-session meeting of the city council today. The city announced that Shah-Khan will receive six months severance at his current annual salary of $166,860.
Shah-Khan has been under scrutiny for his handling of a $750,000 installment from the city to the International Civil Rights Center & Museum as part of a loan while the city was negotiating an arrangement to receive audits of the museum amidst the departure of former City Manager Denise Turner Roth.
Council members were displeased when they found out that staff under Turner Roth’s watch had transferred the funds to the museum before the loan agreement was finalized. Shah-Khan took responsibility for the decision.
“In my role as city attorney, I provided counsel regarding the legal aspects of the issuance of the first payment to the International Civil Rights Center & Museum,” Shah-Khan said in prepared statement on Wednesday. “I advised the former city manager that the museum had met the terms approved by city council during its September 3, 2013 meeting and that the city was legally permitted to provide the payment. In this capacity, I was fulfilling my role of providing legal guidance to the former city manager.”
The resignation is effective immediately. An interim city attorney will be appointed while the city conducts a national search for a replacement, according to an official press release.
Shah-Khan was hired as city attorney in May 2012, after working for five years as a senior city attorney with the city of Charlotte.
