Winston-Salem is giving the rest of the Triad a lot to be jealous of this week, mostly thanks to the Phuzz Phest music festival and the RiverRun International Film Festival. The Gate City’s solid Greensboro Fest of years past doesn’t quite measure up, and RiverRun is unmatched. Yet, a California-based film festival that’s coming to Greensboro later this month does help even the scales.

The Wild & Scenic Film Festival aims “to inspire people and unite communities to heal the earth,” a message that may find more local resonance in the wake of numerous revelations and Duke Energy’s environmental degradation in the state. The Cape Fear River Basin Studies Program at Guilford College — a new program that deserves an article unto itself — is partnering with the Haw River Assembly to host the festival on April 25 at the Carolina Theater. Tickets are only $10 and benefit the environmental group’s work such as river clean-ups and stream monitoring. Maybe the event — with independent films, local beer, guest speakers, and door prizes — will assist a nascent local environmental movement and give Greensboro something to be proud of in RiverRun’s wake.
