ArtsGreensboro announced this afternoon that a $1 million donation will help fund the creation of a performance and rehearsal space aimed at filling a void in the city and retaining young artists.
Jan Van Dyke, the Dance project artistic director, pledged the money for a new space that would expand the Greensboro Cultural Center.
“Young artists and producers often leave Greensboro after graduation because they lack opportunities to present their work,” Van Dyke said. “This facility will enable dancers and other artists to showcase their work cost-effectively in a professionally outfitted space. With an appropriately-sized stage, outstanding technical capabilities, and a ‘sweet spot’ of 400 to 500 income-generating seats, this facility will answer that need.”
According to a press release from ArtsGreensboro, the city council will consider a public/private partnership to support the project.
The Greensboro Cultural Center is adjacent to the future LeBauer Park and downtown performing arts center. ArtsGreensboro said the plan is to also provide greater connectivity and help form “a truly cohesive Downtown Cultural District.”
