Randy Dowell, a sign dancer for Pizza Hut, and Gregory Slade, a street vendor for the Winston-Salem Journal, held a dance-off of sorts at the intersection of University Parkway and Deacon Boulevard/Bonhurst Drive on Wednesday around noon.
Dowell staked out the corner, while Slade held down the median.
Slade might have won more style points than Dowell, but Dowell clearly bested Slade on technical execution and conceptual ambition.
“It’s entertainment,” Dowell said, welcoming the opportunity to perform for passersby and the occasional impromptu documentarian.
Slade expressed similar comfort with the public aspect of his job.
“I’m out here seven days a week,” he said. “I think I might have missed six days only last year. I don’t work on Christmas. That’s a God thing.”
