Phil Berger Jr., who faces Mark Walker in the July 15 Republican run-off election for the 6th Congressional District, received the endorsement of US Rep. Virginia Foxx today at Mt. Airy City Hall.
“Phil is a great conservative and he would add to our already stellar conservative delegation in Congress,” Foxx said in a statement provided by the Berger Jr. campaign. “I know he will hit the ground running and work well with our members to serve the people of this district and the state of North Carolina.”
Berger Jr. has also received the endorsement of Howard Coble, the current representative of the district who is retiring at the end of the year. US Rep. Mark Meadows and US Rep. Patrick McHenry, two other members of the North Carolina delegation who respectively represent the 11th and 10th districts, are also backing Berger Jr
Meanwhile, the Walker campaign today announced endorsements from two former candidates, Don Webb and Bruce VonCannon, who were eliminated in the primary.
The endorsements continue an insider-outsider dichotomy in the race, where members of the Republican congressional delegation and other establishment figures are backing Berger Jr. as an effective representative and Walker’s backers are promoting him as being more connected and accountable to the grassroots.
“As a candidate for the NC6 Congressional seat, I had a unique perspective on the other candidates in the race prior to May 6th,” Webb said. “I spent time with all of them, and listened to them make their case for being elected. I suggest three main criteria for making a selection between the remaining candidates: the candidate, the campaign, and their character. One candidate presented himself as a servant leader who is quick to listen and slow to anger. One has not. One candidate has organized and run an open and honest campaign funded by the people of the district. One has not. One candidate has acted with integrity, honesty and truthfulness throughout the campaign and surrounded himself with likeminded people. One has not. The clear choice in this election is Mark Walker. He does not profess to have all the answers nor all the connections in Washington DC or Raleigh. We need someone who is connected to the people of this district and the conservative principles we need.”
Walker has also received the endorsement of Guilford County Sheriff BJ Barnes and Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson.
