What about Bubbles?

There comes a point every spring when everything just breaks, all at once.

This is that time.

Baseball season is rolling. The sidewalk cafés are open for business. The Great Thaw has done its work, and the scene is bountiful once again.

It’s also a big weekend for me, personally. I’m planning on painting my patio.

  • Cirque du Soleil is known for mind-blowing acrobatics and crazy, WTF moments. This weekend, the French avant garde circus takes on the canon of the King of Pop, which, I understand, is what Michael Jackson preferred to be called before he, um, beat it. The Immortal World Tour hits the Greensboro Coliseum Friday and Saturday, sure to be a thriller! I really hope there’s a role for Bubbles.
  • The Jammin Pig, the Triad’s newest barbecue festival with the carnivirous power of Bibb’s Downtown behind it, starts Friday and lasts until the meat runs dry on Sunday evening You know the drill: lotsa food, live music, rides for the kids, maybe a rib-off.
  • And don’t forget that the RiverRun Film Festival runs through Sunday in Winston-Salem.

  • My RiverRun pick for Friday is the 6:30 p.m. screening of animated and narrative shorts at the Hanedbrands Theatre.
  • The Blind Tiger has American Aquarium at 8 p.m.(ish),  an old-school jamband finding its way in a new sonic landscape. Tell Doc I sent ya.
  • Nantucket headlines the Jammin Pig. I know someone who’s real pumped about that.
  • Or check out Bruce Piephoff at Common Grounds in Greensboro in the mid evening.
  • RiverRunning? Try We Gotta Get Out of This Place at 7 p.m., UNCSA Babcock. The directors will be on hand for a Q&A afterwards.

  • Amplifier ‘zine’s AmpFest begins at noon at Glenwood Coffee & Books, celebrating the pub’s one-year anniversary. Twelve bands, buncha vendors, some good people. Congrats, guys. See you there.
  • Our friends at Greensboro Roller Derby have staged a doubleheader at the Greensboro Coliseum today, with the wheels hitting the track to 4 p.m.
  • This week’s Fresh Eyes columnist Joseph Wilkerson II holds a Second Sunday event at his joint, Uptown Artworks, at 2 p.m. with works from in-house artists.
  • The Jammin Pig jams on, with live music starting at 10 a.m.
  • Jordan Green holds down a non-partisan candidate forum at Hooper Funeral Home in Winston-Salem at 1 p.m. It will absolutely be more fun than it sounds.
  • The Winston-Salem Symphony presents An Evening with Judy Collins at the Reynolds Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Some trivia: Judy Collins was once on “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.” And Houdini once played the same room.
  • And the North Carolina Writers Network holds its Spring Conference, “a full day of workshops, panels, conversations, and more.” Register at the link.
  • My RiverRun picks today: Saturday Morning Cartoons at Hanesbrands, 10 a.m. with Big Bang Boom. That Guy Dick Miller at 1 p.m. 1982 at 7 p.m.

  • Nope, not done yet. For starters, there’s the reception for Rep. Howard Coble at Blandwood Mansion in Greensboro. From the emailer: “No charge to attend. Organizers are asking prospective guests to inform Governor Morehead’s Blandwood if they are attending by contacting Judi Kastner, 336-272-5003 extension 3 or [email protected].” Word on the street is they’ll present him with a new hideous jacket to commemorate his three decades of service in the 6th Congressional District, which he was first elected to represent in 1984. Say what you want about the old rascal’s voting record, I can’t help but like the guy. Go Panthers! Right, Howard?
  • And then Scuppernong Books holds a meet and greet for filmmakers of the Greensboro 48 Hour Film Project at 2 p.m. The competition isn’t until June — this is where you can find or join a crew. I have participated in this event with some success, and encourage anyone with an interest in storytelling to get involved.
  • RiverRun? I say go withThe Color Purple at 1 p.m. at UNCSA, and if you’re really into it, catch Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth at 4:30 p.m.
  • And then it’s “Game of Thrones” for everybody. Don’t call me.
