3. Greensboro

This week’s cover story, “Getting away with murder,” explores unsolved homicides in the three Triad cities and beyond, with an eye towards unsolved murders of black men between the ages of 18-35. Greensboro fares the worst by these metrics, with a citywide unsolved murder rate of 35.7 percent, 45 percent of them young, black men. These are the worst numbers of the state’s big cities.

2. Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem’s unsolved-homicide rate rests at exactly a third — 33.3 percent, a full two points better than Greensboro. Forty percent of them were young, black men, which is still shameful but good enough for the Camel City to place second this week.

1. High Point

The Furniture City scores a rare win in the ranking this week due to its enviable unsolved-homicide rate of 9.1 percent, and the fact that only 25 percent of its unsolved murders concern young, black men.
