3. Greensboro
We’re talking about college hoops in the paper this week, with a focus on the High Point University women’s team (see the cover story beginning on page 20). But here in the ranking we’re looking at the men’s programs across the Triad. In this regard, Greensboro comes in last at this point in the season. The Aggies are running 1-6, as is the UNCG squad. Greensboro College is at 3-2. The bright spot on the city’s efforts this year comes from Guilford College, who at 4-1 have the best record in town.
2. High Point
There’s just the one college hoops program in High Point, but the Panthers are rolling this year with a record of 5-2, which includes a win over UNCG Monday night and a close loss to Clemson by just three points. They’re facing William and Mary on Saturday at home.
1. Winston-Salem
It’s tempting to give Winston-Salem First Place this week just on legacy alone —Wake Forest has the biggest and best-known program in the Triad, the team for the discerning ACC fan. But the Demon Deacons at this point in the season stand just a hair above .500 at 4-3, not counting Tuesday night’s game against Minnesota. So it’s the Winston-Salem State Rams that give the Camel City the edge this week, with a record of 5-1 and riding a four-game winning streak. Their next home game won’t be until Jan. 8, against Virginia State.
