After initially planning to open at a site in downtown Greensboro, Wise Man Brewing confirmed tonight that it will move into a building at the edge of downtown Winston-Salem instead.

Wise Man’s three founding partners, who live in Oak Ridge, wanted to move into the former Gate City Motors building next to the Greensboro Children’s Museum, near the future site of the downtown performing arts center. But when that deal fell through, Wise Man began considering two new locations, one in downtown Greensboro and the other in Winston-Salem.

Sam Victory, the brewery’s founder and head brewer, told Triad City Beat that the company will open at 826 N. Main Street, next door to Ziggy’s music venue at the corner of Trade Street  and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The brick building used to be home to the Angelo Bros. wholesaling business, and is near the forthcoming Broad Branch Distillery on Trade Street.

“The Angelo Bros. building gives us everything we wanted,” Victory said in a statement.  “A 90-year-old brick building in a vibrant downtown location will provide our customers with an Asheville-style craft brewery atmosphere. We believe Wise Man customers will enjoy the open floor plan accommodating both our brewery and taproom, along with plenty of outdoor space for a beer garden, food trucks, and special events.”

The site will include a brewery and taproom, and Victory said that Wise Man intends to distribute regionally. The plan is to open in spring 2016. Wise Man will be the fourth brewery in Winston-Salem, joining Foothills, Small Batch and Hoots. There are already four breweries in Greensboro, and a fifth one in the works. Two planned breweries in High Point would bring the Furniture City’s total to three.

The planned brewery and adjacent music venue mark the northern edge of Winston-Salem’s downtown. Other development is rolling in the area too, including the planned Camel City BBQ Factory and the future opening of the Famous Toastery in what used to be the District Rooftop Bar & Grille. It is also near the new Artivity on the Green art park and Black Mountain Chocolate‘s factory and storefront.
