Same-sex couples and marriage equality advocates await a ruling from US District Court Judge William Osteen in Greensboro that allow gay marriages to begin in North Carolina as early as this afternoon.

Frank Brooks and Brad Newton have been at the Guilford County Register of Deeds Office waiting for a decision for most of the week.

Osteen set a deadline of noon for all filings in litigation seeking to overturn the state’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. Q Notes has the filing from state House Speaker Thom Tillis and state Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger.

Chris Sgro with the LGBT rights organization Equality NC said the fact that the Osteen set the filing deadline at noon indicates the judge might want to give himself a “runway” to issue a ruling this afternoon to allow time for same-sex couples to tie the knot before the end of business today.
