3. High Point
Concurrent with the announcement of the retirement of Jeri Rowe, longtime columnist at the Greensboro News & Record, we’re ranking the cities of the Triad based on their daily newspaper’s metro columnists. High Point gets last place because they don’t technically have a metro columnist, but they do have a fun sports column, Off the Porch, by Dick Jones.
2. Greensboro
Jeri Rowe, who took over the N&R’s metro column after Lorraine Ahearn went off to get her PhD, compiled a cast of Greensboro citizens with inspiring and tragic stories — and, often, wacky nicknames — giving a personal face to the city. He’s got eight more columns to go before moving on to become High Point University’s senior writer, getting himself knocked to No. 2 for selling out.
1. Winston-Salem
The Winston-Salem Journal’s Scott Sexton is everything a metro columnist needs to be: tough, smart, funny, informed and willing — more than willing — to take a stand. He’s a great writer, with a knack for being in the places where news happens. And he’s also won a Green Eyeshade Award from the Society of Professional Journalists for his part in the series “Against Their Will,” about North Carolina’s eugenics program.
