Six months ago, three journalists put one of their wildest ideas into action — what if they started their own newspaper, one that they owned and controlled?
“We asked ourselves if we could create something that really made a difference, a media company that engaged its people — advertisers, readers and even employees — on a different level than anything that had come around before,” Editor-in-Chief Brian Clarey said. “We thought something like that might be genuinely amazing, a newspaper that existed for more than just the purpose of taking money for advertising.”
Now, 27 issues later, Triad City Beat is going strong. The free weekly newspaper and daily online news outlet covering news and culture in Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem, North Carolina operates on the belief that hustle and drive are frequently able to outperform money.
To support the newspaper’s continued growth, Triad City Beat is launching a Kickstarter campaign this week to raise money for additional outdoor distribution boxes, hire freelance writers and to establish an Investigative Journalism Fund. More information is available here.
“We work hard to have the most relevant coverage of what is important to residents of the Triad,” publisher Allen Broach said. “It is an honor to be part of such an amazing team. Our first six months have been great and I am excited about what our next six months will bring!”
Triad City Beat invites the public to celebrate six months of publishing and the launch of its Kickstarter campaign at two parties this week: Aug. 27 at Scuppernong Books in downtown Greensboro and Aug. 29 at Delurk Gallery in Winston-Salem. Both events are free and run from 6 to 9 p.m. The Kickstarter campaign will be active for 30 days and anyone who supports independent journalism or who has enjoyed the newspaper is encouraged to contribute and receive any number of rewards listed on the site.
