There is no shortage of options when it comes to wine specials in Winston-Salem, democratizing access to a class of drinks often conflated with the elite. Here’s a selection — by no means an exhaustive list — of weekly wine specials around town, helping you swirl or gulp vino on the cheap every day except Friday.
1. Tate’s
As the name implies, Tate’s Craft Cocktails is known for something other than its wine deal. Selected by Imbibe magazine as one of the 100 Best Places to Drink in the South, Tate’s also has a wine list “of 18 affordable but hard-to-find red and white wines.” The establishment offers half price bottles on Mondays, but show up on Tuesdays for half-price glasses with live jazz.
2. Jeffrey Adams
It isn’t surprising that there is a martini list at the posh bar in the back of Jeffrey Adams (which they sling for $5 on Thursdays). The comfortable seating adjacent to the bar is a great place to enjoy half-price wine by the glass on Tuesdays as well.
3. Milner’s
Not only does Milner’s American Southern Cuisine & Cocktails run wine specials three nights a week, but the restaurant’s wine list “earned the acclaimed Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for years,” according to its website. Milner’s offers half-price glasses of wine on Wednesdays as well as half off select bottles on Fridays and Saturdays.
4. Old Fourth Street Filling Station
Ye olde Filling Station is probably the only place I’ve ever seen an “afternoon menu” between lunch and dinner time, but chances are you’ll miss it since the special menu ends at 5 p.m. The dinner menu offers a number of dishes that people typically associate with wine, including fish and steak. Glasses and bottles are half off on Thursdays.
5. Burke Street Pub
A bar with a boozing leprechaun isn’t exactly an image quickly associated with wine, which might be why the Burke Street Pub is the only venue in town I can find that offers half-price wine by the glass on Saturdays (and they give half off bottles too).
6. 6th and Vine
A place with “vine” in the name is bound to care about its wine list (and they certainly have a strong local reputation), so take a break from their Cucumber Gimlet or Summer Sunset Rita and try one of the half-price wines on Sundays. It’s by the bottle though, so bring a few friends to avoid regretting it Monday morning.
7. Finnigan’s Wake
This Irish pub also offers half-price wine by the bottle on Sundays. Head to the relative intimacy of the bar’s enclosed lower back patio to round out the week. Maybe pair it with the Blarney burger or fried cod sandwich.
