Teachers and parents joined Guilford County School Board member Darlene Garrett in calling on the county and state to fully fund teacher’s assistants and public education this afternoon.
At a press conference on the steps of the old county courthouse before the Guilford County Commissioners meeting (today at 5:30 p.m.), attendees said teacher’s assistants play a “vital” role that is often overlooked in schools, adding that they fill a wide variety of needs within a school.
“After cutting 3,500 teacher assistant positions last year, the Senate budget proposes cutting $223 million currently allocated to teacher assistants, resulting in the elimination of another 7,400 teacher assistant positions statewide,” a press release for the event said.
That includes a projected 333 positions in Guilford County, according to the release.
