There is a national trend towards militarization of law enforcement, we see the results in Ferguson… With our history of police brutality and betrayal in Greensboro, I think we need to be concerned and ask hard questions. For example, what has the GPD received from the federal government in terms of surplus military equipment? What kind of training are our police officers receiving, and when would they use this equipment? How has the lack of leadership (meaning the number of different police chiefs we’ve had rotate through) affected these issues? I would like to see a community forum to address these and other recent concerns.
We can answer at least one of those questions! Here’s information about what law enforcement agencies in Guilford County received through the federal surplus program. I was actually pretty surprised: https://triad-city-beat.com/military-gear-not-that-popular-with-local-police/
