3. Winston-Salem

This week in the ranking we’re evaluating the events we’ve covered for this issue in the respective cities. For this week’s art piece on page 30, Sayaka Matsuoka took on Winston-Salem’s storefront window art exhibit, open to all viewers on the downtown streets… in January. True, people will brave the cold weather in New York City to see what Macy’s has put up in their windows, but in Winston-Salem, it seems to have fallen flat.

2. Greensboro

The Fringe Fest began its three-week run at the Greensboro Cultural Center this weekend, the subject of Brian Clarey’s cover story beginning on page 20. The Fringe, which has been running for 13 years, has morphed from an amateurish collection of oddball performance pieces into a weighty artistic statement. It’s enough to put the Gate City in slot No. 2 this week.

1. High Point

Frankly, the whole reason we chose this criteria this week is so we could plug the sold-out Black Violin show at the High Point Theatre, reviewed by Jordan Green on page 28, and give High Point a well deserved First Place. Kudos to the High Point Theatre for bringing such a great act to town, and congrats on the win.
