Wolfgang Puck Pizza Bar quietly closed in Greensboro on Tuesday, a spokesperson confirmed via email.

The restaurant — part of the Wolfgang Puck culinary empire — was one of only three under the Wolfgang Puck Pizza Bar concept in the nation.

A chain, yes, but as I wrote in a review of the restaurant last year, it deserved recognition because of “the unassailable quality of the food and the venue’s ability to exude a level of authenticity that other chains cannot muster.”

But this isn’t the end of the story for Wolfgang Puck in the standalone building along the eastern edge of the Friendly Shopping Center; the company will announce details about a new concept called WP Kitchen + Bar later this week, according to spokesperson Maggie Condon.

DSC05176The new restaurant will change more than the name — it will revamp the menu to offer dishes “inspired by how Wolfgang himself eats and entertains at home,” Condon said. There will be some holdovers from the old menu (maybe most importantly, the new restaurant will also serve pizza) as well as new small plates, handmade pasta, seafood and more. Condon said WP Kitchen + Bar will feature “globally-influenced fare served in a family-style format.”

The Greensboro location will be one of only two thus far; the other is open in Palm Desert, Calif.
